Illinois Show To Feature 2 National Champions
By Patt Lindberg
DCN June 5, 1963 issue
The Custer's Brigade Jr. Drum and Bugle Corps, American Legion SAL State Champs, have just finalized their plans for their spectacular "Blue and Gold Tournament of Champions", a contest with an International Flavor, to be held June 30 in Mundelein, Illinois.
The corps will be competing in two classifications - Class "A" and an Open Class. Those scheduled to take part in the Class "A" division will be the MARION CADETS, Ohio State Champions; CEDAR RAPIDS CADETS, Iowa State Champions; NORTHERNAIRES, Michigan State Champions; and MAPLE CITY CADETS, Indiana State Champions.
In the Open Division it will be, THE BLACK KNIGHTS (Belleville, Ill.)49th State Assoc. Champions; MADISON SCOUTS, Wisconsin State Champions; THE CAVALIERS, National V.F.W. Jr. Champions; and TORONTO OPTIMISTS, 5-time Canadian National Champions.
It would appear that this contest will be a "hi-light" of the Midwest corps season. The pitting of two National Champions.... The Cavaliers and the Optimists... has been a long awaited event by these two corps, their many fans and drum corps followers everywhere. Even without these two corps, this show would be an outstanding one.
Ticket sales are already moving at a brisk pace, with over 1,000 tickets already sold.
