Jack Pankow joined the Racine Fire Department and was killed while fighting a fire at the Taster's Choice restaurant on December 23, 1980. Another Racine firefighter was also killed with Jack while fighting this fire when the roof collapsed on both of them. There is now a park in Racine dedicated to both of these firefighters. What's even more unfortunate about this incident is that the fire was deliberately set, two people were tried for arson in this matter, however, a jury found them not guilty.
Another of the Kilties snare drummers of that era was Charlie Johnson who was killed in Vietnam on September 11, 1967. He was a member of the 1st Cavalry Division and was a door gunner om a helicopter.
Two great guys!!!
