Here's some behind the scenes that would not be known. The Northernaires were the defending champions having won the previous couple of years. In '62 I was the soloist but, I was also a teenager who did stupid teenage things. I had taken my grandfather's car out for a joy ride and gotten into an accident. Against pleas from my mother, grandfather (it was his car), and corps director Bill King, my father grounded me for the summer. I'm not saying that the season turned on my stupidity, but the corps just wasn't in it that year even though we felt good about where we were going when the season started. Now you know the rest of the story.
Although the Northernaires were always good and a rival we chased for a number of years the L'Anse Golden Eagles beat you a number of times in '62. The highlight was the Legion Michigan State contest later that summer in Lansing where the Golden Eagles were crowned Michigan State Champs!
