It was a real hoot reading my own 43 year old thoughts on the '64 Kingston show. Funny thing....it's maybe only one of four shows I remember from that season and the only one where I distinctly recall filing up to and standing on the starting line. I remember feeling a balmy breeze wash over me and seeing tightly packed stands. That was before the Kingston stadium was refurbed and definitely the days before astroturf!
It was the first time I saw the Criterions that year. I was impressed with some of their music. Their production number "Runnin' Wild" (from the Billy Wilder production of Some Like it Hot) broke some new ground. It featured a contrabass duet.
I remember standing next to the Marksmen at retreat that night. The other rudi-bass player and I had co-opted the use of Dr. Scholls 'moleskin' placed across the center of the drum head from the Marksmen. It changed the tone of the drum to our liking. We took a lot of kidding from the Marksmen's bass player - all in the spirit of good fun. The Marksmen really were kickass good that year. Nice guys too.
