Ballentine Corps Parades In N.J.

Drum Corps News May 22, 1963 issue

The big attraction in the Loyalty Day Parade held at Asbury Park, N.J. was the first appearance of the much-talked-about BALLENTINE BREWER Corps.

Carrying out the color theme of their uniforms, the Corps carries beautiful satin flags of red, black and white. Two of their numbers are "Mr. Ale Man" and "Flower Drum Song".

The Neptune Shoreliners won the Junior part of the competition. Pt. Pleasant Pointers outscored the Livingston Hilltoppers to take second. Also in attendance were the Asbury Park Hurricanes, the Eatontown Jersey Rangers and the Middletown Coppertones.

It was a wonderful day. Back when towns had many
Parades. Loyalty Day was always a good one for the Corps to try
out their New Misic "Outdoors".
>Asbury Park had parades for everything.
> March was a St. Patrick's Day Parade.
> May was Loyalty Day and Memorial Day.
> June would often have one of the Big State Covention
Parades (VFW, Legion, Elks, or Firemen).
> July 4th was a big one also.
> August meant another State Convention of the same groups
as above.
> September gave us the Labor Day Parade.
> October was Columbus Day.
> November was Veterans Day and the Big
Thanksgiving/Christmas Parade.
> Some times other groups like The Rainbow Girls Covention
would come and have a Parade. Also had the "National Miss
Colege Queen" Contest parade occasionally.
>Drum and Bugle Corps also did Movie premiers at local
theaters. My Corps did King of Kings - Ben Hur - and Bridge or
the River Kuai.
>Local Corps like;
>Neptune Shoreliners
>Asbury Park Hurricanes
>Point Pleasent Pointers
>Eatontown Jersey Rangers(Royales)
>Middletown Coppertones
>Brick Townsmen
>Toms River St. Joe's (Modernairs)
>Union Beach Firesiders
>Keyport Jersey Cyclones
>Atlantic Highlands Lamplighters
>ALL at the same time. That in a 30 mile radious of Asbury
Park, NJ.
>(Add another 15 miles and beside all the other little
known local corps you get;
>Audubon Bon Bons - Garfield Cadets - St. Lucy's Cadets -
Blessed Sacramemt Golden Knights - St. Vincent's Cadets -
Our Lady of Lourds - and the Patterson Cadets for that same
time period.
>I also wrote for Easter Review. a Column called "Where the
City Meets The Shore", along with my Drum Corps News
Articles and Photo's.
